Honoring Mom And Dad For a Lifetime

How do we obey the 5th commandment to honor Mom and Dad over a lifetime?
I found pastor Mark Driscoll’s insights helpful so I added to them to come up with the following outline:
  • Age O – 14: Honoring primarily means Obedience: Doing what is asked to learn self control, respect for authority, and that we aren’t the center of the universe. Fruit: Trust, healthy boundaries, and security.
  • 15– 22: Honoring transitions from Obedience to Giving Respect: Respect is acknowledging authority and giving the right to speak into life. Honoring in these years means surrendering power and willingly inviting input while submitting to authority. Fruit: Delayed gratification, trust, joy in serving.
  • 22 – 40 Honoring becomes proactive Enjoyment, Incorporation into Life, and Wisdom Seeking . This is a season not to be best friends but to enjoy the gifts, character, and accomplishments of Mom And Dad, willingly inviting them into the routines and seasons of life while seeking out their wisdom and advice. Fruit: Vitality, love, communication.
  • 40 – 60 Honoring aging parents means to Celebrate, Reconcile, and Care. Creatively celebrating Mom and Dad! Seeking to end well, reconciling and leaving nothing unsaid, while caring for physical, emotional, relational, and spiritual needs. Fruit: No regrets. Building a legacy that lasts. Ending well.

Obeying this Commandment comes with a promise:
“So that it will go well with you and you will enjoy a long life in the Land.” (Ephesians 6:2)

Which stage are you in? How are you honoring your parents or becoming honorable parents?

David, what wonderful pointers on honoring one's parents. I spent a lot of time in God's Word on this subject as I sought to honor my parents from when I was born anew at age 15 to when they died when they were in their nineties. Your have hit the nail on the head! Thank-you!
